Hello everyone I switched to Linux for the first time just yesterday. Mainly for privacy and security reasons. I use Firefox and have the same settings and about:config tweaks as I have on my Windows. Whenever I watch a YouTube video (I have to mention, I haven’t watched any videos on other sites or even video playback using VLC yet), there’s a lot of dropped frames. It is really distracting and annoying. Enjoying video playback is practically impossible lol. I don’t know what to do. I have my Ubuntu dual booted alongside Windows 10 and I just don’t want to switch to Windows for media playback. I have to mention that when I tried installing proprietary drivers, none of them came up. In additional drivers setting, it states that there are no additional drivers available and that no proprietary drivers are in use. Could it be a driver issue? If so, is there an incompatibility between my specs and Ubuntu or do I need to tweak something using a terminal to see the available drivers? I’ve also heard it could be a hardware acceleration issue while using Firefox. Supposedly, Firefox on Windows has hardware acceleration integrated while on Linux such a function doesn’t exist. If this is the root of the problem, are there any ways to mitigate this? My network speed is surely not an issue: 0 ms ping, 135.6 Mbps down (Speedtest by Ookla) via WiFi. I’ll try to watch a movie using VLC tonight and I’ll see if the same issue appears. Then at least I’ll be certain it’s not: a) only Firefox, b) Firefox at all. My guess is that the issue is a lack of proprietary drivers/driver incompatibility. Any help would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/Wixxybyte [link] [comments]
