Many of the emoji in my system were missing/weren’t loading in color. I followed the directions in this post and updated my ~/.config/fontconfig/conf.d/01-emoji.conf file as instructed in the aforementioned link (code provided below) and now I have emoji overkill!
My default system font is now changed, the text/character spacing is weird, many 1-9 number characters are now replaced with numbers inside of orange circles, etc. I am now seeing this unwanted emoji overkill effect in many places: on various websites viewed in Firefox and Chrome, in my shell terminal/console, and in various applications such as Visual Studio Code.
How can I keep my proper system fonts but also ensure full color-emoji are working properly? I’m sorry to post an entire new question, but I don’t have enough “reputation points” to post a simple comment on the existing question.
From the link, here is what is currently within my 01-emoji.conf file:
<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM “fonts.dtd”>
<fontconfig>
<alias>
<family>serif</family>
<prefer>
<family>Noto Color Emoji</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
<alias>
<family>sans-serif</family>
<prefer>
<family>Noto Color Emoji</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
<alias>
<family>monospace</family>
<prefer>
<family>Noto Color Emoji</family>
</prefer>
</alias>
</fontconfig>

And here is a screenshot of the Wikipedia article page for “Emoji,” showing the annoying text spacing and orange number-text circles.
Thank you for your help!
