How to establish ethernet connection through Cisco router on Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu Server?

Spread the love

Hey does anyone have experience with Cisco routers (or “controllers” I guess they’re called)? I bought one for my room and as far as I can tell it does receive an ethernet signal from the wall (XFinity). There’s an official Xfinity router downstairs in the living room but I need an ethernet connection for the server I am trying to start up in my room.
I bought one of those expensive console cables (USB <–> ethernet) to talk to the router from my laptop (Ubuntu 18.04) and the devices appear in /dev (serial & ttyUSB0), and I am able to “log in” to the router using screen. Tried minicom once but it didn’t seem to work. Will get back to that one next one more time, after this post.
So I guess my question is: How do I establish an ethernet connection through a Cisco router on a Comcast internet plan on an Ubuntu laptop and/or an Ubuntu server?
