mouse button 8 and 9 consistently fire twice

Spread the love

I’m testing Pop_OS 20.04 in a Hyper-V VM and have noticed that the side-buttons (forward/back) on my mouse consistently fire twice on a single click, causing e.g. Firefox to go back/forward by two pages instead of one.
I checked with xinput test and can see that with each click, I see a press and release event for button 8/9 on mousedown and mouseup respectively.
Tried another mouse to rule out physical damage – same behavior.
The only customization I have in place for mouse input was setting the button map to 1 2 3 4 5 8 9 – I have nothing like imwheel installed.
Could this be some issue introduced by Hyper-V’s Linux-VM-Tools or what could I try to fix this?
Thanks for anyone pointing me in the right direction here.
