Hello r/linux! I’m excited and nervous to announce some ideas I’ve been working on. It has been a process so far and I am still in the Research and Design phase. So please be gentle with me. Overview I do Cryptocurrency trading on a regular basis and this has been one of the methods I’ve been using to generate a passive income. Trading applications seem to be far and few to none on Linux and the few times I have done research on financial apps for Linux… to say the least, it has been scarce and limited. Proposal So I want to know if others are interested in an application that can do Cryptocurrency trading natively? This would be a Linux only application. It should support multiple exchanges that have publicly available API’s. I.E. Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Bittrex, and others. It will support Dollar Cost Averaging and Dollar Value Averaging. It will support basic trading. It will support basic automated trading. It should support basic Technical Analysis such as Candle Sticks, MA, EMA, MACD, and Linear Regression. I am looking for input and ideas that people would be interested in having implemented. I am looking for input for UI and UX design. I have researched the most popular exchanges and most of them support some form of API which is a good thing and makes something like this possible because you would need to be connected to the internet regardless. It should be built using a well supported library such as Tk/Tcl, Qt, Gtk, or some other GUI based library. The most likely candidate so far is Gtk because I am a Gnome user and I am more familiar with Gtk than the others. I am also considering Qt but don’t like the fact that parts of it are proprietary. Gnome is fully open source software and is built using C which is my first programming language. I am interested in desktop applications that resemble this and already exist and are only for Linux. I am not interested in web or mobile clients at all. There are more than enough of these already. It should be hosted on a public VCS platform such as Github or Gitlab. Yes, I have looked at supported applications and they do not fit the scope I am interested in. Some Background My higher education mostly consists of High School and so I do have some gaps in my knowledge and understanding which I work on on a regular basis. Usually daily. For the past few years I have been studying Politics, Philosophy, Ethics, Psychology, core Comp Sci topics, Mathematics, Algorithms and Data Structures, Core API’s, and more. Most of my free time is spent researching and studying. I am completely self educated and my resources are extremely limited. I learned how to program on Linux. My main programming languages of choice are usually C and Python. I am also knowledgeable in XML, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, Bash, and have some limited experience with Assembly (Mainly the 6502 Processor). I am a Gnome user and have been using Gnome since 2004. I finally made the jump and went Linux full time about a few years back after being a lifetime Windows user. Post.Script. I’ve always wanted to contribute by creating a useful piece of software for Linux by filling a gap or niche that is scarce. This seems like something that might scratch that itch for me. I will build it regardless. The difference will be whether I share that with others or not. If people are not interested in something like this, then I would prefer to build it for my self. Summary I am looking to start a discussion and appreciate anyone who adds constructive input and criticism. Play nice and thanks for your time! submitted by /u/daemoncluster [link] [comments]
