Video capture card works from live usb stick but not after installation

Spread the love

I have a rather weird issue.
I installed Kubuntu 20.04 on my Mac Mini (2014), and then I connected a cheap USB video capture card. It didn’t work, so I tried other computers to check if it’s the capture card.
It works on my Windows-10-laptop.
It works on that same laptop using Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.
It works on a MacBook Pro (2011) using Kubuntu 20.04 (installed from the same USB stick as the system on the Mac Mini).
And – and this is where it gets weird – it even works on the Mac Mini running Kubuntu 20.04 from the live stick.
Is there some kind of automatic driver selection going on during the installation?
I tried leaving out updates and proprietary packages during installation, but that didn’t change anything.
I also tried having the “card” in question plugged in during installation, but that didn’t change anything either.
To be precise it’s not that the whole card was not recognized, it’s just the video part. The audio input is always available, meaning it’s not that the whole device was unavailable, it’s just not recognized as a video input device.
