Hi everyone. On recent mesa (git around ~Sept 11th) there is a *massive* memory leak at least on AMD cards. My system: 8GB system ram 8GB swap R9 290 Ubuntu 20.04 using oibaf ppa Gnome wayland After about half an hour hour, the 8gb of system ram fills up with no apparent process actually consuming all the RAM. After a little longer, the 8GB of swap fills up. At that point, oom-killer kills whatever has the most ram used. It killed Firefox before system lockup one time; another time it killed gnome-shell and threw me out to gdm3. The instability is not at all protocol or desktop environment specific; it is solely the expected behavior exhibited upon memory pressure resulting in killed processes when any executing elevated tasks immune to oom-killer (such as drivers, in this case mesa) consume the entirety of system memory and force the killing of tasks that can be, to make room. Once all such tasks are killed and there is no memory left to free for the ballooning driver, the system will predictably crash. The exact oibaf release tag that introduced this bug was 20.3~git2009110730.65d0fa~oibaf~f. I opened a Mesa bug at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/3513. Wanted to do a post here as a PSA/warning to not update from oibaf’s/git mesa right now. The leak is catastrophic. It requires a sysrq magic key force reboot. At least two others have experienced this with the same config: mesa git and AMD graphics. their experiences are here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/ir9kvx/ubuntu_2004_possible_memory_leak_with_gnomeshell/ Also wanted to see if others have experienced this. submitted by /u/newhacker1746 [link] [comments]
